Synopsis
The walker came off a bankrupt wind farm in pieces and it does not have a battery, on account of Marisol Tejada being sixteen and unable to afford one. It runs on lightning. This works better than anybody expected, twice a week, for about forty minutes at a stretch. The rest of the time it stands in her grandfather's yard looking like an expensive mistake. In June something out on the caprock starts drawing off the same storms, in amounts that would run a city, and one Thursday it turns and comes down the section road behind her, keeping pace, in no particular hurry.
Who this is about
Marisol Tejada is sixteen, five foot one, and drives a four-ton salvage walker that only works during lightning, which is the least strange thing about her afternoons.
What goes wrong
Something out on the caprock is pulling current off the same storm cells she runs on, in quantities nothing built in Texas should need, and it has started following the walker home.
What's at stake
Her grandfather's ranch sits on the only substation for sixty miles. If the thing on the caprock finishes what it is doing, the plain goes dark and stays dark.
Why it keeps going
Storms come through about twice a week, which is how often the walker can move, which is how often Marisol gets to find out anything at all.
