Synopsis
Del Hargrove has run a hotshot crew for eleven seasons and has never lost anybody. She will tell you that is arithmetic and weather. She has also never been on a fire that did this. At four in the afternoon the fire crosses the 12 Road and takes the only way out. Behind her is a ridge that burned this morning and will hold. With her are three people who have been on the line nineteen hours. Then the radio. An engine crew of six, cut off below her, no black anywhere near them. The ridge will keep three people alive. The canyon is the only thing that reaches six, and it is not going to stay open.

On the radio, an engine crew of six is cut off in the drainage below her. The burnt ridge saves her three. The canyon is the only thing that reaches the six.
Why it keeps going
Every hour the fire writes a new map, and Del has to decide again whose people she is responsible for, out loud, in front of the three who are hers.
