Synopsis
Odessa Pike taught fourth grade for thirty-one years and has lived on the ninth floor of the Bellwether since her husband died. She knows the Velas across the hall by their dog and the young couple in 903 by the baby. At ten past four the sixth floor of the building is simply not there anymore. The stairwell ends in open air. Six people in what they went to bed in are standing on a balcony that is no longer level. Hector Vela put up steel for thirty years. He can tell them what the slab is doing and how long it will keep doing it. He cannot tell them who should go down the ladder last.
Who this is about
Six people who knew each other only well enough to nod in a hallway are standing on a ninth-floor balcony at four in the morning, in whatever they went to bed in.
What goes wrong
The sixth floor of the Bellwether is gone. Not damaged. Gone. The stairwell ends in open air and the balcony they are on is four degrees off level and getting worse.
What's at stake
Hector Vela spent thirty years putting up steel and is the only one who can read what the building is doing. Whatever order he puts them in, somebody goes last.
Why it keeps going
Every few minutes the slab gives a little more, and six strangers keep having to agree about something, out loud, with a baby on the balcony and no way to ask anybody else.
