Synopsis
The Ridgemarsh County Home has eighty-one residents, two aides on nights, and a staffing sheet that says four. Ronnie Pike signs it at the end of every shift because the alternative is a conversation nobody upstairs wants to have. He is not a whistleblower and has never wanted to be one. He is a man who knows which door to open first at two in the morning, and who has been getting that order wrong more often since June. The state inspection is in eleven weeks. Ronnie has until then to decide whose name the sheet is protecting.

Ronnie Pike has worked nights at the county nursing home for nineteen years and knows every resident's first name and most of their children's.
What goes wrong
The county sells the home to an operator that cuts the night staff from four to two, and Ronnie is handed the sheet that says the shift was fully covered.
What's at stake
Signing keeps his job and his insurance. Refusing puts his name on a complaint that also names every aide who signed one before him.
Why it keeps going
Each night is a fresh arithmetic of who gets checked on and who waits, and the sheet is on the clipboard by six in the morning.
