Synopsis
Verdigris County, 1889. There is a coal seam under Berenice Tull's hundred and sixty acres, which is the entire reason anybody in Oklahoma has ever heard of Berenice Tull. In March the syndicate sent three men out at night to persuade her. She buried all three in the west field, and then she went in and made breakfast for her boys, and nobody has ever proved a thing. It has been quiet since. The syndicate has lawyers, a rail spur and a newspaper, and it is not in any hurry. Berenice sits on the porch in the evenings, where the road is visible for two miles.
Who this is about
Berenice Tull is forty-four, farms a hundred and sixty acres of Oklahoma the coal syndicate wants, and has recently become the most talked-about woman in the county for reasons she considers practical.
What goes wrong
Three men came at night to burn her out. She buried them in the west field, which the syndicate cannot prove, and which everybody in Verdigris County already knows.
What's at stake
The seam under the field is worth more than the county. Two sons, one farm, and a reputation that keeps the next three men away exactly as long as it holds.
Why it keeps going
The syndicate has lawyers, a railroad spur, a newspaper, and patience. Berenice has a porch with a good view of the road, and every week somebody different comes up it.
