Synopsis
The basin is a hundred miles of pale ground and creosote with nothing in it anyone would drive to, which is why Marisol Vance walks it. Nine seasons of plant transects, eleven days at a stretch, alone by design. On the second afternoon she finds a nineteen-year-old sitting in the shade of his own bicycle, no longer sweating. She gives him the truck, the radio and the full jugs, points him at the road, and watches the dust go. By evening she has found the split in the seam of the canteen she kept. Nobody is expecting her anywhere for nine days. She sits down in the last of the shade and starts doing the arithmetic.

Marisol Vance surveys plant transects for the federal government in a Nevada basin the size of Connecticut, alone, by design, for eleven days at a stretch. She has done nine seasons.
What goes wrong
On day two she finds a nineteen-year-old with heat stroke and no vehicle. She gives him the truck, the radio and the good water, points him at the road, and keeps walking.
What's at stake
The canteen she kept has a seam split she does not find until evening. Nobody expects her out for nine more days, and the boy may not have made it to a phone.
Why it keeps going
Each day is one more decision about water she does not have, made by a woman who already spent it on somebody she is never going to meet again.
