The mill went in March. Not gradually, the way people had been promised it would, but on a Friday, with a notice on the gate and a number to call that nobody ever answered. By June half the team has moved away. Terrell Banks is still here because his mother works at the hospital, and hospitals do not close. There is no track at the school. There has never been a track at the school. His coach measured a mile of county road with a wheel he borrowed and never gave back, and that is where Terrell runs, and the qualifying meet is in three weeks.
Who it follows
Terrell Banks runs for a school with no track, on a mile of county road his coach measured himself with a borrowed wheel.
What goes wrong
The mill closes in March, half the team moves away over one summer, and the June meet is the only thing left on the town calendar.
What is at stake
A qualifying time is a scholarship. There is one meet, and one attempt at it.
What keeps it running
Each episode is another week of training on a road rather than a track, against boys who have had one their whole lives.
What you take away
A town that has nothing left will put all of it on whoever is still running.
