Nine days. Seventeen casseroles. Eleven households, three of which Marion Vance could not have named two weeks ago, and one of which she is fairly certain moved away in the spring. The freezer is full. The second freezer, in the garage, is filling. Every dish arrives in the hands of somebody who would like to come in for a moment, and who then stays rather longer than a moment. Around the fourteenth, Marion begins to notice that none of them ask her anything, and all of them tell her something.
Who it follows
Marion Vance has been widowed nine days and has received seventeen casseroles from eleven households, none of which she asked for and all of which arrive with a visit attached.
What goes wrong
Somewhere around the fourteenth dish she begins to understand that the casseroles are not for her.
What is at stake
If she says anything at all, she becomes the grieving woman who was rude.
What keeps it running
Each episode is one more dish, one more visit, and one more thing the neighborhood has quietly decided about her marriage.
