She tends her brothers' vineyard. She is sunburned, sharp-tongued and unimpressed by palaces. The king has everything except her. The court wants a political marriage. Her brothers want to protect her. She wants to know whether he loves her or only wants her, and she will not be won like the other brides at court. There are meetings in the fields, the city at night, and messages carried by friends. Her freedom is at stake, and so are his crown's alliances, and so is a love neither of them can command, one that has to wait for the right time.
