Synopsis
They buried Tom Bell in April, in ground he had complained about for eleven years, and by the end of the month Cora had a full accounting of what he had left her: four hundred head, a mortgage she had not known the size of, and thirty-one miles of fence. The first post comes down in May. She sets it back herself and says nothing, because saying something means saying it to somebody. By the second week of June it is a quarter mile, and a neighbor mentions, kindly, a survey she has never been shown.
