About this title
Synopsis
Dale Marsh won a thirty-eight foot cabin cruiser at a county auction for the price of a used pickup. His brother-in-law Kyle says it can't be hauled nine hundred miles to the coast by Sunday. Dale says it can. They shake on a week of fishing. The trailer is borrowed. The permits are not quite permits. The truck is Kyle's, and Kyle is in the passenger seat counting every mile. By Tuesday they have a bridge they can't fit under, a trooper who has pulled them over three times, and a cruiser that has started to smell.
Who this is about
Dale Marsh is thirty-four, a high school shop teacher who has never lost an argument about trailers, and he has lost the last four.
What goes wrong
His brother-in-law Kyle bets him a week of fishing that the cruiser Dale just won at auction cannot reach the coast by Sunday, and neither man is allowed to ask for help.
What's at stake
Winning is bragging rights at every family dinner for life. Losing is bragging rights for Kyle at every family dinner, and a boat nobody can afford to keep.
Why it keeps going
Nine hundred miles of oversize load rules, a bridge that is lower than it looked on the map, and a state trooper who keeps pulling them over for increasingly different reasons.
Takeaway
Any argument is worth having if the other guy is the one who has to ride with you.
