About this title
Synopsis
Delphine Moreau has driven the Cutbank bus for twenty-six years and keeps a laminated book of rules she wrote herself. There is a page for ice, a page for flood and a page for wind. The whiteout closes the road eleven miles from the last stop. Eleven children are aboard. The page for this one has two words on it. Stay put. The tank is half full, the heater runs on the engine, and there is no signal. The temperature will reach twenty below by midnight. The oldest kid, fifteen, says out loud what she has been trying not to think. Nobody knows they are out here.
Who this is about
Delphine Moreau has driven the Cutbank school bus for twenty-six years and has a laminated rulebook she wrote herself, with a page for every weather the county can produce.
What goes wrong
A whiteout closes the road eleven miles short of the last stop with eleven children aboard, and the rulebook's page for this situation is only two words long: stay put.
What's at stake
Staying puts eleven children on a bus with half a tank and no signal in a night that will reach twenty below. Leaving puts them on foot in a storm they cannot see across.
Why it keeps going
The heater runs on the engine, the engine runs on the fuel, and the older kids are starting to say what the driver already knows, which is that nobody knows they are out here.
Takeaway
Rules are written by people who were once somewhere cold and have decided it will not happen again.
