About this title
Synopsis
Ruth Calloway has weighed trucks on the Pell Gap scale for thirty-one years. If a manifest says forty thousand pounds, it weighs forty thousand pounds. One night a sealed refrigerated trailer comes in eleven thousand pounds light. The driver is polite, the paperwork is perfect, and her supervisor calls from home to say pass it. She passes it. By dawn the same truck is back, the driver is gone, and the trailer weighs exactly what an empty one should. The manifest in the system carries her sign-off. A man in a clean coat starts sitting in the lot at the start of every shift.
Who this is about
Ruth Calloway has inspected trucks at the Pell Gap weigh station for thirty-one years and has never once passed a load she could not account for.
What goes wrong
A sealed refrigerated trailer rolls onto her scale reading eleven thousand pounds light. The driver has paperwork that checks out and a calm that does not.
What's at stake
She passes it on her supervisor's say-so, and by dawn the same truck is back, the driver is gone, and the trailer is weighed empty to the ounce.
Why it keeps going
The state wants the incident closed, the manifest is already in the system under her sign-off, and a man in a clean coat has started to appear at her booth every shift.
Takeaway
A person is tested by the single time she looked away, and the rest of her life is spent being tested again.
