Vector Nine

Synopsis

Reentry is the part everybody worries about and it is not, on the whole, the part that goes wrong. It went fine. The parachutes went fine. Everything went fine except the heading, which was out by an amount nobody has yet said aloud. They are four hundred miles from where three countries agreed they would be, in a fourth country that is party to none of it. The capsule is found within the hour, which is faster than any rescue could manage, by men who are not carrying a radio anybody upstairs can hear.

Who this is about

A crew of three survives an off-nominal reentry into territory their nation holds no agreement with.

What goes wrong

The capsule is found first by people who are not officially looking for it.

What's at stake

Nobody is coming, because officially there is nothing to come for.

Why it keeps going

Each episode is one more day in a place that will not confirm they exist.

Takeaway

A government will go on denying you long after it has started trying to get you back.
