Synopsis
The Starlite Court sits on a two-lane forty miles from anything, and its vacancy light has been on almost every night since 1979. Ellis Prouty has worked the desk, ten until six, for eighteen years. People come to a place like that in order not to be anywhere. Ellis understood this early and made a discipline of it. He takes cash, hands over a key, and writes nothing anyone could ever read back to him. In October a young woman asks him, quietly, to write her name in the book, so that somebody would know she had been here. He writes it. She is gone by Thursday, and the page is the only one in eighteen years.
Who this is about
Ellis Prouty has worked the desk at the Starlite Court from ten at night until six for eighteen years, and has made a discipline out of remembering nothing on purpose.
What goes wrong
On a Tuesday in October a young woman asks him to write her name down so that somebody will know she was here. He does. By Thursday she is missing.
What's at stake
That page is now the only record of nine other people who trusted the Starlite precisely because Ellis kept no records, and every one of them wants it back.
Why it keeps going
Each episode someone comes for the page, offering money or explaining consequences, and Ellis, who is sixty-four and has nowhere else to be, keeps not handing it over, because she asked him to write it.
