Synopsis
Odette Marsh catalogs what the dead leave behind. Wallets, rosaries, a watch with the wrong time. Most of it sits on a shelf in the county basement until the paperwork says to throw it away. In three different winters, three unrelated unclaimed men have come in carrying the same hand cut key, stamped with a number. The number fits no lock in the county. She finds the storage unit. It is paid up through next year, and the person paying has already come to the morgue twice to ask about the clerk. This morning a fourth body arrives. In his coat pocket is the same key.
