Synopsis
Cal Brannock is not related to the yard. People ask, every so often, and he says no, and they seem disappointed. He has been a track foreman for twenty-two years and is known in town as a man with no imagination. In April he files a defect report on eleven miles of rail, which is the correct procedure. The railroad believes him the same week, embargoes the line, and lays off three hundred people. The town has two thousand in it. Nobody derails, nobody burns, nobody is hurt, and no way exists to show anyone what did not happen. A retraction would reopen the line by Monday, and Cal knows how to write one.

Each episode is another week of being correct in a town that would have preferred he were not, and another chance to write the retraction that would put everybody back to work.
