About this title
Synopsis
Sig Halloran has run the outer coast for thirty years and can name every cove on it. Britt has not been in a boat with him since she was seventeen, and she said yes in June for reasons she has not explained. The rock is one he knows. That is the part he cannot say out loud. The skiff goes over at half tide and the water takes the outboard, the dry bag and the radio inside of a minute. What is left is a beach, a tide book in his jacket pocket, and sixty miles to the village at Kanuk. The shore floods to the cliffs twice a day. They get about four hours at a time.
Who this is about
Sig Halloran took his daughter Britt out on the water because it was the only invitation she had accepted in nine years, and he has run that coast for thirty.
What goes wrong
The skiff goes over a rock at half tide and takes the outboard, the food and the radio down with it, leaving them on a beach no road has ever reached.
What's at stake
The only route out is sixty miles of shore that floods to the cliff face twice a day, and walking it means trusting each other's judgment about when to run.
Why it keeps going
Every tide hands them about four hours of beach and takes it back, so the trip is thirty short forced negotiations between two people who came out here to avoid having one.
Takeaway
Two people who cannot talk will still learn everything about each other if something makes them keep time together.
