Synopsis
The district runs three hundred miles west out of Fort Smith and it has one deputy marshal in it. Amos Teller is paid by the mile traveled and by the prisoner delivered, alive. He rides out in November with warrants for eleven men, a wagon built to hold six, a cook, and a boy to drive. The cook quits at Eufaula and the weather turns a month early. There is no relief column, no telegraph, and no authority behind him but a piece of paper from a judge two hundred miles east. The first name on the list has four sons.

What goes wrong
He rides out in November with warrants for eleven men and a wagon meant for six. The weather turns early, the cook quits at Eufaula, and none of the eleven wants to come.
What's at stake
Eleven prisoners, one guard, six weeks of frozen ground. Every man he brings in alive is a man the court can hang legally, which is the only argument he has left.
Why it keeps going
The warrant book is long, the district is large, and the department reimburses nothing it did not authorize. Every arrest is a bargain struck with somebody's family in their own yard.
