Synopsis
The Nomad Star is a loaded crude carrier, nine hundred feet, forty men aboard, three days east of St. John's in February. Danilo Ocampo is the second mate. He is twenty-nine years old. At 0210 a cargo tank breaches in a following sea. By 0300 the master is unconscious in the chart room, the chief mate is gone over the side, and one ballast pump out of four is still answering. The ship can be held. Holding her requires men standing in a pump room that is filling. Letting her go loses the cargo, the hull, and forty payoffs that forty families are counting on. Danilo has the deck.

Danilo Ocampo is twenty-nine, second mate on a loaded crude carrier in February on the Grand Banks, and the most junior officer anybody has ever handed a ship to.
What goes wrong
A cargo tank breaches in a following sea. The master is unconscious, the chief mate is over the side, and one ballast pump out of four is still answering. Forty men are aboard.
What's at stake
Keeping the ship upright means men in the pump room. Clearing the pump room means losing the ship, the cargo, and every wage forty families are waiting on.
Why it keeps going
Every hour the list gets worse by a degree, and every order Danilo gives sends somebody down a ladder he would not go down himself if he had a choice.
