Synopsis
The load is forty-one feet of reactor casing that has to be on a pad in Grand Junction by six, and it cannot stop, cannot back up, and cannot be insured. Four trucks. One pass. Eleven hours of dark. Boone Kessler has done this route for thirty years and picked the other three drivers himself. Dane, who he trained. Yolanda, who is better than he is. Pete, who owes a man in Pueblo more than any of them make in a year. At nine o'clock the shipper calls Boone and tells him one of the three has been bought, and will not say which, and will not delay the load. The trucks start rolling at ten.
Who this is about
Boone Kessler has run Loveland Pass in weather for thirty years and is the only man the shipper trusts to lead. He picked the other three himself.
What goes wrong
Two hours before the climb he learns one of the three took money to put the load in a ravine, and he is not told which, and the load cannot wait.
What's at stake
Pulling all three loses the contract, the shipper and everything the four of them have built. Running with them means one truck behind him is waiting for the right curve.
Why it keeps going
Each episode is one more mile of the climb, one more radio call, and one more piece of a man Boone thought he knew all the way through.
