About this title
Synopsis
The Vell County exchange is two rooms over the hardware store. At night it is one woman, Ivy Larue, a headset and a board of brass jacks. She has connected births, deaths and most of the county's arguments for twenty-six years. At ten past eleven one June night in 1961, every light on the south end of the board comes on at once. Then the roof over the back room goes. Ivy's daughter is twelve, home alone, on the south end. Her line is dead. Every other light on the board is somebody asking Ivy what to do, and she is the only one left who can answer them.
Who this is about
Ivy Larue has worked the night board at the Vell County telephone exchange for twenty-six years and knows most of the county by voice, which is the only way most of it knows her.
What goes wrong
A tornado tears through the south end of the county one June night in 1961, and her switchboard becomes the only link left between the farms, the doctor and the sheriff.
What's at stake
Her own house and her twelve year old daughter are on the south end. Leaving the board to go and find them cuts off everyone else she could still reach.
Why it keeps going
The storm line is still moving, the roof over the back room is gone, and every light on the board is somebody asking her what to do next.
Takeaway
Some people are heroes for one night because they spent twenty-six years being the person everyone already called.
