About this title
Synopsis
Marguerite Ivey surveyed the Hallowell system at twenty-six and knows the flooded passage at the bottom of it better than anyone alive. She has not put on a mask in six years, and nobody local has ever asked her why. On a Friday in March, four students walk past the sign. On Saturday the rain starts. By Sunday night there are four people breathing in a chamber with a dropping ceiling and eleven hundred feet of water between them and the world. The nearest qualified team is thirty-six hours out. Marguerite's gear is in the garage where she left it. The passage takes one person at a time.
Who this is about
Marguerite Ivey was the best sump diver in three states until a recovery went wrong, and she has not put on a mask or gone underground in six years.
What goes wrong
Four students are alive behind eleven hundred feet of flooded passage in a cave she surveyed herself, and every diver qualified to reach them is a day and a half away.
What's at stake
Going in means she may bring out four, or one, or nobody, and this time she knows the arithmetic before she starts. Waiting means the water decides it for her.
Why it keeps going
The rain does not stop, the air pocket shrinks by a measurable amount every few hours, and the passage carries exactly one person at a time.
Takeaway
Courage is rarely a feeling. Most days it is a person finishing the arithmetic and then going anyway.
