About this title
Synopsis
The Ammerhold was a resort hotel for sixty years and a hospice for the last eleven. It has good light, a working elevator, and a second floor that families ask for by name. Renata Bosque works nights. She has sat with more dying people than she can count, and she knows the shape of a last week the way a sailor knows weather. On the second floor that shape is wrong, and it has been wrong since the day she started. Nobody upstairs is lying to her. The charts are honest. That is the part she cannot get past, because it means whatever happens at the Ammerhold happens in the open, with everyone's consent.
Who this is about
Renata Bosque has nursed hospice for sixteen years and took nights at the Ammerhold because it is quiet, well run, and the families there are unusually calm.
What goes wrong
Second floor patients outlive their prognoses by months while their closest relatives go thin, quiet and old in the waiting room, and nobody on staff has ever charted it.
What's at stake
Proving it means telling families that the time they were given was taken from someone they love. Leaving it means she hands out the same bargain every night she works.
Why it keeps going
A new admission comes up to the second floor most weeks, and Renata is the nurse who decides which room has a bed free.
Takeaway
A gift nobody can explain is usually a bill that somebody else has already been handed.
