About this title
Synopsis
Tomas Ehle was born on the Meridian and expects to die on it. Ninth caretaker of a line that walks the sleep decks, keeps the air moving, and hands the watch to the next one. In the archive he finds a wake order. Countersigned, complete, correct. Dated two hundred and eleven years before his birth, and never executed. Eight men read that page before him and each one closed the drawer. Forty thousand people are still asleep on a ship that arrived a long time ago, and the air will only carry one deck at a time coming up.
Who this is about
Tomas Ehle is the ninth caretaker of a colony ship, born aboard, raised to walk the sleep decks and to want nothing except to hand the watch on clean.
What goes wrong
He finds the wake order in the archive, countersigned and never executed, dated two hundred and eleven years before he was born. Eight caretakers read it and passed it down.
What's at stake
Waking forty thousand people means telling them what was done to them, and the only names on it are the eight men who taught him everything he knows.
Why it keeps going
He can only wake them one deck at a time, because that is all the air will carry, and every deck has to be told by someone what year it is.
