About this title
Synopsis
Duane Hobart has escorted nineteen soldiers home. He knows the whole liturgy of it. The salute on the ramp, the hearse, the state trooper who will not take money for the miles. He reads the folder on the plane because that is the job. Somewhere over the Atlantic he reads it a second time, and then a third, and by Newfoundland he has stopped pretending the dental chart belongs to the name stenciled on the case. The funeral is Saturday. The town has hung flags all down the main street. Hobart has a satellite phone, a duffel, and eleven hours.
Who this is about
Sergeant First Class Duane Hobart escorts the fallen home, nineteen of them in four years, and he has never handed a family a flag with one single thing about it out of place.
What goes wrong
The twentieth set of remains arrives with a name on the transfer case that does not match the dental record in his folder, and the error is eleven days old and three countries wide.
What's at stake
Saying so halts a funeral that two hundred people are already driving toward. Saying nothing gives one mother the wrong son and buries the right one as a stranger.
Why it keeps going
Every hour the casket moves nearer a town that has hung flags the length of its main street, and every office he calls sends him one office further up.
Takeaway
The last man in a chain of custody is the only one who can still be honest for free.
