Synopsis
1790. Edmund Burke, the Irish statesman, defended the Americans in Parliament. Thomas Paine wrote the pamphlets that helped start their war. They backed the same revolution, and they are old friends. Then France has a revolution of its own. Burke warns that tearing up everything old will end in terror. Paine calls him a traitor to liberty. Letter answers letter and pamphlet answers pamphlet, while the news from Paris starts proving one of them right. Their friendship goes first, then their reputations. In the end the revolution Paine defended puts him in prison with his head at stake, and their argument becomes the one every free country has had since.
