About this title
Synopsis
Tom Lindqvist has not paddled a canoe in thirty years. His son Eli is sixteen, would rather be anywhere else, and says so. The trip is the one Tom's father took him on, a chain of northern lakes with no roads and no signal. Tom thought it might give them something to say to each other. On the fourth day they run a rapid they should have walked. The canoe goes under a log and stays there. They have one pack, one paddle, and a map Tom has to admit he does not fully understand. The nearest road is sixty miles off. Nobody is expecting them for nine days.
Who this is about
Tom Lindqvist, a suburban dentist, takes his sixteen year old son on the backcountry canoe trip his own father once took him on, mostly to have something left to talk about.
What goes wrong
On the fourth day the canoe goes over in a rapid they should have walked around, and they come out of the water with one pack, one paddle and no boat.
What's at stake
The nearest road is sixty miles of lake, bog and portage away. Tom is the one who chose the route, and his son has not let him forget it.
Why it keeps going
Nobody expects them out for nine days, the nights are already freezing, and by the second day Tom's knee has gone and the boy is carrying the pack.
Takeaway
A father finds out what he actually taught his son on the day the son has to carry him.
