Synopsis
Pallas runs twelve-hour shifts under a mass driver that throws ore at a station eleven minutes away. Ruth Okonjo commands the day face. Ninety-one workers. Six years without a fatality, which on Pallas is a record. She keeps that record by counting. Every worker clips a tether line, every line logs a name, and every night she reads the log before she sleeps. In March the log starts reading a hundred and six. There is no hundred and six. Somebody is working fifteen people on her face who are not on any roster, and every hour of it carries her signature.

What goes wrong
The tether logs record a hundred and six clip-ins against a roster of ninety-one. Somebody is running unlisted crews on her face, under her authority, on the shifts she signs.
What's at stake
Fifteen people nobody will look for if the face goes. Stopping the driver to find them puts the contract, and ninety-one legitimate jobs, in the company's hands.
Why it keeps going
Every shift she works is another shift she has signed for, and the count is not going down. It goes up in the weeks the subcontractor gets paid.
