Synopsis
The overpass comes down at 4:40 in the morning, with the truck on it. That was not an accident and it was not luck. Somebody knew the route, the weight, the schedule, and which of the two drivers would be behind the wheel. Wes Duhon wakes up in the weeds forty yards out, with a broken forearm and no idea how long he has been down. Above him, six men are working the wreck with cutting gear, and none of them has come down to check the weeds. His partner is still in the cab. He can hear her on the radio clipped to his shoulder, asking whether anybody is out there. The radio is not a secure channel.
Who this is about
Wes Duhon has driven armored transport for nine years and has been told, every one of them, that the correct response to a hijack is to sit still.
What goes wrong
Somebody drops the overpass under him on the way to Baton Rouge. He wakes up outside the truck, unaccounted for, and his partner is still in the cab, breathing.
What's at stake
Nobody knows he is alive, which is the only advantage he has and the only thing keeping him alive. Using it means walking back toward six men who are counting.
Why it keeps going
Each episode is another twenty yards of broken concrete, another man he recognizes from the yard, and another minute his partner does not have, on a road that is not going to be reopened tonight.
