Synopsis
There were four rules in that house and Aubrey grew up with all of them. Do not open the coal door. Do not sleep in the front bedroom in August. Do not let the dog upstairs. And do not, under any circumstance either stated or imagined, move the mirror in the back hall. His father never explained one of them. Asked directly, twice, he changed the subject in a way that ended it. Aubrey buries him in October and comes back to the house in November with a van and a list.

Aubrey inherits the house and, with it, a mirror in the back hall that his father forbade anybody to touch for forty years.
