About this title
Synopsis
Okonkwo Notary and Check Cashing sits between a phone store and a shuttered tax office. Genevieve has run it for eleven years. She witnesses signatures, not intentions, and she has been careful about the distinction. In June she went to Verna Prisk's funeral, because Verna had used the window every month since the place opened. In August, Verna signs a quitclaim deed on her counter, in blue ink, in a good enough hand. The man holding the paper is polite and unhurried and has an answer ready for everything. Genevieve's seal number is on the last eleven things he brought her.
Who this is about
Genevieve Okonkwo runs a notary and check cashing window in a strip mall, stamps forty signatures a day, and has built a quiet career on not reading what she is stamping.
What goes wrong
A deed crosses her counter signed by a woman whose funeral she attended in June, and the patient man presenting it has been through her window eleven times this year.
What's at stake
Refusing the stamp costs her the commission work that keeps the lights on. Taking it makes her the instrument that steals a dead woman's house.
Why it keeps going
He keeps coming back with more paper, each document propping up the one before it, and her own seal number sits on every single page.
Takeaway
A person who earns a living by not looking eventually has to price what looking would cost.
