About this title
Synopsis
The Halfway Motor Inn has forty rooms, a broken ice machine and one man on overnight. Felix Amaro balances the ledger, answers the phone and sleeps sitting up. He owes more than he makes, and the bank wants his car back on Monday. At two in the morning a man in a good coat checks into 214 with a license and a credit card in the name of Leonard Pask. Felix remembers Leonard Pask. Housekeeping found him in 214 in April. The man slides five hundred dollars across the desk and asks Felix to forget his face. Felix puts the money in his pocket. Then he reads the card number again.
Who this is about
Felix Amaro works the night audit at a tired highway motel outside Coldwater Junction, balancing the day alone from eleven to seven and owing more money than he earns.
What goes wrong
A man checks into room 214 under the name and card of a guest Felix knows died there in April, and pays him five hundred dollars cash not to notice.
What's at stake
Taking the money clears the debt that is about to cost him his car. Reporting it puts him in the way of a man who knows exactly which shift he works.
Why it keeps going
The card clears every night, the guest has extended twice, and the owner has started asking Felix to call him the moment anyone comes asking about 214.
Takeaway
Being paid not to see something is the same as agreeing that you saw it.
