About this title
Synopsis
Cal Brandt has driven in forty pictures and appears in none of them. He is the man who goes through the window so the actor does not have to. The last jump on his contract is a canyon in the Tehachapis. The car is a 1970 coupe borrowed from a rival who wants it returned without a scratch. The ramp is half built, the third gear sticks, and the first light of the shoot is at 5:40. Cal said he would do it. That is the only reason anyone believes it will happen.
Who this is about
Cal Brandt, thirty-four, drives for the movies out of a shop in Bakersfield, 1974, and has never missed a mark or a payday.
What goes wrong
The stunt coordinator is hurt the night before the canyon jump, and the only car that can make the distance belongs to a rival who wants it back in one piece.
What's at stake
Making the jump pays off the shop and the six men who work in it. Missing it puts a hood ornament through a camera truck and Cal out of the business.
Why it keeps going
One take, a ramp still being welded at dawn, a car with a stuck third gear, and a crew that bets against him out loud.
Takeaway
Keeping your word is easy when it is cheap, and a jump is a promise you make with your whole weight.
