About this title
Synopsis
The Sevrin array was built to listen and is being taken apart on a schedule. Tovah Brannick is its last caretaker, nine months from rotation, on the only ground in the solar system where Earth never rises. The structured return arrives on a Tuesday. Aimed, unmistakable, and keyed to a broadcast sent before she was born. The committee that was supposed to receive such a thing lost its funding in April and nobody replaced it. It repeats every nineteen hours, and each repetition changes one element, as though it is being patient with her. A reply takes eleven years to land. The first sentence is hers.
Who this is about
Tovah Brannick keeps a decommissioning radio array on the lunar far side, nine months from the end of a two year posting, alone on the only ground where Earth never rises.
What goes wrong
The array hears something structured and aimed, answering a broadcast sent forty-one years ago, and the oversight committee built to receive such a thing was defunded in the spring.
What's at stake
Relaying it up means the first words humanity sends back get written by whoever moves fastest. Holding it means she alone decides what the species knows and when.
Why it keeps going
The signal repeats every nineteen hours with one element changed each time, so it is not a message, it is a conversation already underway, and it is waiting on her.
Takeaway
The hardest part of being answered is that somebody then has to speak next.
