Synopsis
The eleven forty out of Neskoy takes fifty minutes in good water. Kirby Doan works the stern, ties the cars down, and counts heads twice, once leaving and once arriving. He is good at it and the numbers have always matched. He also sells the last spot for forty dollars cash after the manifest closes. He has done it about forty times. Tonight the twelfth passenger is a woman with a canvas bag and no ticket. Eleven walk off at Neskoy Point. The manifest says eleven, the cameras say eleven, and the only record that there were ever twelve is a number in Kirby's head and the money in his jacket.

What goes wrong
Twelve board and eleven walk off. The manifest, the cameras, and the ticketing system all say eleven, because the twelfth passenger was the one Kirby put aboard himself.
What's at stake
Reporting a missing woman means admitting the cash, which loses him the job, the license, and the only income keeping his mother in the facility in Astoria.
Why it keeps going
The ferry runs twice a night, six nights a week, and each crossing gives Kirby one more chance to find her and one more chance to be caught looking.
