About this title
Synopsis
Dean Pruitt has pulled traps off Port Clyde for twelve years and has never lost a man. His brother Caleb is nineteen and on his second season aboard. In February the Annie Rae is rolled by a wave nobody saw coming. Dean surfaces in thirty-eight degree water with one survival suit, one ledge a hundred yards off and a brother with a broken collarbone. The ledge is dry for three more hours. After that the tide takes it. Dean has promised their mother more than once that they would both come home.
Who this is about
Dean Pruitt, thirty-one, has run his own boat out of Port Clyde since he was nineteen and has never once hired a man he was not related to.
What goes wrong
A rogue wave rolls the Annie Rae in thirty-eight degree water, leaving Dean, his brother Caleb and a half-flooded survival suit between them.
What's at stake
The ledge is dry at low tide and under water at high. The only way off it is a swim that Caleb, nineteen and hurt, cannot make.
Why it keeps going
Two men, one suit, a ledge that shrinks with the tide, and a boat three miles away that does not know they are gone.
Takeaway
The sea gives you a long list of reasons to quit, and one good reason to keep going.
