Synopsis
Ruth Cardosa died in March, eighty-nine years old, and her sister gave the historical society eleven boxes of paper because there was nowhere else for it to go, and nobody opened them until Nadine Okoro opened box forty-one. Inside is thirty years of one woman's work on a night in 1961: inspection tags, a marshal's diagram, nineteen affidavits, and the names of eleven people who burned in a building the city's records say was never occupied and never caught fire. Ruth is dead and cannot be embarrassed. Four of the men she names are alive, retired, and have streets and scholarships in their honor. Nadine is a clerk with a cataloging deadline, and she has read all of it.
