About this title
Synopsis
Brennerman Hardware has sold nails in Oxbow since 1961. Walt runs it now, and he cuts keys the way his father taught him: never from a picture, never for someone who cannot show you the lock. On Monday a pleasant woman in a church sweater showed him a photograph of her late mother's house key and cried a little. He cut it by eye. It took four minutes. On Friday the house on the tag was emptied while the owners were at a funeral. The store camera has her face. It records over itself in six days. On Saturday morning she walks back in and asks for one more.
Who this is about
Walt Brennerman has cut keys at the back counter of his own hardware store for thirty-one years and has a rule against copying a key he cannot hold, which he broke once, on Monday.
What goes wrong
A friendly woman showed him a photo of her mothers house key and a sad story, he cut it by eye, and on Friday the address on her tag makes the evening news.
What's at stake
Handing over the footage admits he broke his own rule and puts the stores name in every report. Deleting it makes him the only man who could have helped and chose not to.
Why it keeps going
The camera writes over itself in six days, the woman has come back for a second key, and she is standing at his counter smiling.
Takeaway
The favor you do for a stranger is only small until you learn what it opened.
