About this title
Synopsis
Dell Okafor cleans the Saint Brannock chapel after dark, and he likes the quiet. He locks up at ten and checks every door twice. For three weeks, at dawn, a man has been sitting in the fourth pew with a hymnal open. The doors have never been touched. The man never looks up. The pastor says Dell is tired. Dell stops sleeping and starts watching. Each night the man sits one pew closer, and the hymnal is open to a page torn out of every other copy after the fire in 1974. Dell has begun to recognize the face. He has seen it in the photograph by the vestry door.
Who this is about
Dell Okafor has cleaned the Saint Brannock chapel for fourteen years, alone, after dark, and has never once been afraid of the building.
What goes wrong
Every morning a stranger is sitting in the fourth pew with a hymnal open, and every morning the locked doors are exactly as he left them.
What's at stake
The pastor wants the janitor replaced if he keeps raising it. Dell needs the job, and he has started to recognize the face in the pew.
Why it keeps going
Each night the stranger sits a little closer to the front, and the hymnal is open to a page that has not been used since the fire of 1974.
Takeaway
Some places keep their congregations a lot longer than the buildings do.
