Synopsis
Elias Boone learned to play in the basement of a church on Ninth Street. He drives a parts truck five days a week and plays six nights, and he has never once sat in a room where the music was written down in front of him. The Kesswich Symphony auditions behind a screen. He wins fourth chair on a Tuesday and is told on Thursday that the position has been restructured. Nobody will say the word. The season runs thirty-one programs. Somebody gets sick in every season, and Elias intends to be the man they have to call.

What goes wrong
He wins the audition behind the screen and loses the job the moment the screen comes up, on a technicality nobody will quite point at.
What's at stake
Fighting it means naming people in a small city where every gig he has runs through one of them, and losing means never being asked again.
Why it keeps going
The orchestra has a season, and every program is one more chance to be needed on a night somebody else cannot play, in front of the people who said no.
