Synopsis
The bells at Kessler Landing were meant to be rung when the gauge read forty-two feet, and on a January morning in 1937 Emmett Rourke rang them at thirty-eight, four hours early, on nothing but the color of the water. His town went up the hill and lived, every one of them. Across the river they heard the bells, understood they had four hours yet, and finished their breakfasts. The water came at nine. He is seventy-one now and has never said, in the county he saved, that he rang early. Saying it would explain everything. It would also tell the far bank whose bells they had been counting on, and he has spent thirty-four years deciding not to.
Who this is about
Emmett Rourke keeps the levee and the bell tower on the Kentucky side of the Ohio, a job of forty-one weeks of boredom and eleven of watching water.
What goes wrong
In January 1937 he rings four hours before the gauge says to. His town empties and lives. The bank opposite hears the bells, believes it has four more hours, and does not.
What's at stake
He was right and cannot prove he was right, because being right meant nothing happened where he was standing and everything happened where he was not.
Why it keeps going
Each episode is a year further from the flood, another man in the county who will not sit near him, and another chance to say the one sentence that would explain it.
