Synopsis

Eleven seasons. June Halloway knows the Kettle Creek pack the way you know a family: which one limps, which one hangs back, which yearling will not last a hard year and which one will. The cabin is forty miles from a road. Her supply run is monthly, her nearest neighbor is a rancher named Cal who flies her mail in and stays for dinner, and she has been happier out here than she has ever admitted to anybody. This winter the count comes back nine short, and there are only so many ways that happens.
