About this title
Synopsis
Calvin Reyes raises the Marrow Cut bridge for boats and lowers it for cars, and in twenty-two years nobody has asked him for anything else. The hurricane evacuation has been going since noon. At nine that night, a line of unmarked trucks pulls up to the gate and men with radios tell him to leave the span down and walk away. Out on the causeway a school bus is racing the surge. Raising the bridge strands two hundred people. Lowering it lets the trucks through. The booth door is locked from inside, the water is eleven feet, and the override code belongs to the nineteen year old who relieves him at midnight.
Who this is about
Calvin Reyes has tended the Marrow Cut drawbridge for twenty-two years from a one room booth with a console, a heater and a radio that only carries weather.
What goes wrong
On the last night of a hurricane evacuation a convoy of unmarked trucks arrives and demands he keep the span down, while a loaded school bus is racing toward the other side.
What's at stake
Raising the bridge strands two hundred evacuees on the wrong shore with the surge coming. Leaving it down lets men cross who plan to loot everything left behind.
Why it keeps going
The booth is locked from the inside, the surge is eleven feet and rising, the console has one override and the only person who knows the code is a boy of nineteen.
Takeaway
The smallest job on the road turns out to be the one that decides who gets to leave.
