Synopsis
Four men in the village can still find the one place in a hundred square miles of white where a seal comes up to breathe. Toovak Aiken is fifty-eight, and he is the youngest of the four. Two hundred forty people live here and the store sells nothing anyone can afford. The ice goes out earlier every spring. This year there is one hole working, four miles out, and the route to it is soft in places that were never soft. His sister's boy is fifteen and stands by the sled every morning, waiting to be told to get in. Toovak knows what the ice is doing. He also knows what happens to a thing nobody is taught.

What goes wrong
The ice goes out earlier every year. This spring there is one hole working, it is four miles from shore, and the route to it is soft in places that were never soft.
What's at stake
His nephew Simeon is fifteen and asking to come. Teaching him on this ice could kill them both. Not teaching him means the village loses the knowledge in one generation.
Why it keeps going
Each trip out is a smaller hole, thinner ice, and one more morning Toovak has to decide whether the boy is in the sled behind him, and what he is teaching either way.
