About this title
Synopsis
In the Calder Territory a cow belongs to whoever's iron it wears, and Amos Teague is the man who says so. He keeps the brand book, every registered mark in the territory, and rides the railheads with it in a saddlebag. In eleven years nobody has found him wrong. A herd of two hundred comes into Sawyer with a rancher's mark burned over by a running iron. Teague can read what is underneath. It is the mark he registered for his brother Jesse the year the boy turned sixteen. The buyers want the herd on the morning train. The rancher is riding in with six men. Jesse is camped two miles out.
Who this is about
Amos Teague is brand inspector for the Calder Territory and carries its only complete brand book, and in eleven years at its railheads he has never once read a hide wrong.
What goes wrong
A stolen herd reaches the Sawyer railhead with a running iron burned over a rancher's mark, and the brand underneath is the one registered to his younger brother.
What's at stake
Writing it in the book hangs his brother under territorial law. Leaving it out makes him a liar in the only book anyone in the territory trusts.
Why it keeps going
The buyers want the herd cleared for the morning train, the robbed rancher is riding in with six men, and his brother is camped two miles out waiting for word.
Takeaway
A man who keeps the record honest for strangers finds out what it costs to keep it honest for his own.
