About this title
Synopsis
Every other Tuesday the county bookmobile comes up Rattle Creek, and for forty stops through the hill country that is the library. Hattie Grosbeck drives it. She keeps westerns for the widower at the feed store and picture books for the twins at the end of the gravel road. The county board has voted to sell the bus and pave the courthouse lot with the money. Nobody on the board has ever ridden it. Hattie has twelve days of circuit left and a pension signed by the commissioner who made the motion. At the third stop, the feed store, forty people are waiting with a petition she did not write.
Who this is about
Hattie Grosbeck has driven the county bookmobile on its forty stop circuit through the hill country for nineteen years, and knows what every reader on it wants before they ask.
What goes wrong
The county board votes to sell the bookmobile at the end of the month to pave the courthouse lot, and the readers on her circuit have no other library within fifty miles.
What's at stake
Fighting the board means taking on the commissioner who signs her pension. Driving the last circuit quietly means telling forty stops, one at a time, that she is not coming back.
Why it keeps going
Twelve days, forty stops, a vote that can still be reopened at the next meeting, and readers along the route who have started organizing without asking her.
Takeaway
A town finds out what something was worth on the day somebody tries to sell it.
