About this title
Synopsis
Route 9 is nine stops, a bank payroll and eleven hours in a steel truck. Nate Okerlund rides the back with a shotgun and a clipboard. He keeps his routes in pencil and checks every lock twice, which Danny the driver has teased him about for three years. At stop four, Nate catches a number on Danny's phone that doesn't belong there. By stop five he understands. The route has been sold, and the crew is waiting at stop six. The cage has one door. The radio reaches dispatch in two spots. Nate has six shells and nobody to call.
Who this is about
Nate Okerlund is thirty, a former Army reservist from Spokane, and the guard on the back of Route 9 who writes his routes in pencil and checks every lock twice.
What goes wrong
Partway through the route he realizes the driver beside him has sold the day's schedule to a crew waiting at the next three stops.
What's at stake
Nate can open the cage and walk away with his life, or hold the truck shut with a customer's payroll inside and everything he promised the company he would protect.
Why it keeps going
A steel box on a mountain highway, a shotgun with six shells, a radio that only reaches dispatch in two spots, and a driver who knows every move he makes.
Takeaway
The oath you take for a paycheck is still the oath, and the paycheck is not why you keep it.
