Synopsis
The Marquette has nine floors, a lobby the color of weak tea, and ninety-one rooms rented by the week to people the banks stopped writing down years ago. Abram Teague lives on the fourth and lends to all of them. He is seventy-one. He buys their debts at a tenth of face and carries them at rates that would horrify a regulator and have kept, by his own quiet arithmetic, a great many people indoors through a great many winters. In November he buys the paper of a man in 508 who is dying and knows it. The man has nothing to sell but what he has watched Abram do for thirty years, and somebody downtown is buying.
Who this is about
Abram Teague is seventy-one and lives on the fourth floor of the Marquette, a residential hotel where he is the only bank ninety-one people are ever going to have.
What goes wrong
He buys a dying man's paper for a tenth of face, as he always does. The dying man has one asset left, which is everything he knows about Abram's book.
What's at stake
There are people who want the Marquette emptied and its residents scattered. Abram's book is the only thing holding ninety-one rooms together, and it is now for sale.
Why it keeps going
Each episode is one more tenant whose debt Abram could call in to save himself, and one more evening he sits with the ledger open and does not.
