About this title
Synopsis
The Coast Guard has a saying that you have to go out, but you do not have to come back. Jack Halloran has never liked that saying, because he has every intention of coming back. A crab boat is dying on the bar. The swells are the biggest the station has recorded. His crew looks at him the way crews look at the man holding the wheel. He nods once and opens the throttle.
Who this is about
Seaman Jack Halloran is twenty-seven, a Coast Guard surfman from a fishing family on the Oregon coast, certified to drive the boat across the bar in weather that stops everyone else.
What goes wrong
A crab boat loses power on the bar in a winter gale, with four men aboard, and every other rescue asset is hours away.
What's at stake
A forty-seven foot lifeboat can roll and right itself, but not in breakers this size. Cross the bar and he may lose his own crew. Stay and four men are gone.
Why it keeps going
A self-righting lifeboat, a three-man crew, thirty-foot swells, a bar that moves with every wave and a deadline measured by the tide.
Takeaway
They have to go out. They don't have to come back. But they do the job so the others can.
